A little over two months ago, we didn’t know if Kirk Cousins was even going to play. Now, there are questions in Washington — serious questions — about whether he should get a contract extension.
Life moves fast.
Cousins has played well enough at times after replacing Robert Griffin III to make them come up, but he danced around them Wednesday.
“I really don’t deal with it,” Cousins said, via Liz Clarke of the Washington Post. “Just try to focus on playing the game. I’ve got enough to worry about with Carolina and every team after that. That consumes my focus.”
No, really, we’re talking about whether Kirk Cousins should get a new contract.
“I appreciate the question, but I feel like it’s best for me to just focus on week-to-week and understanding that in this league, things change and happen so fast,” he said. “I’ve gotten myself in trouble when I start to think and look down the road and predict things, so I try to take it one week at a time, one day at a time. I’ve learned to handle it that way. When you look any further than that, you’re gonna get all kinds of things that you may have never expected.
“My focus is on Carolina, and I think it’s best to leave it at that.”
The former fourth-round pick is entering the final year of his rookie contract, meaning he’ll become an unrestricted free agent in March unless a deal is struck. Or, unless Washington uses the franchise tag on him.
Seriously, this is a story about Kirk Cousins.
He did post a perfect passer rating and threw four touchdowns against a team that promptly fired its defensive coordinator, and has had some other highlights scattered through his first year as a starter, including a comeback from a 24-0 deficit to beat the mighty Buccaneers.
And yet, it still seems odd that we’re talking about whether Washington should use the franchise tag on or give a contract extension to Kirk Cousins.
