Texans coach Gary Kubiak remains committed to his starting quarterback. And if Captain Kubiak continues on this path, he could be going down with the Schaub.
Back in June 2012, Kubiak opted to accept only a two-year extension, putting him under contract for three years, through 2014.
“It could have been four years but Gary has assured me that with the level of success he’s going to have that he’s going to be worth a lot more money if at three years instead of four and so I had to agree with him,” owner Bob McNair said at the time.
Now, Kubiak’s decision to swing for the fences could have the door swinging into his backside, since it’ll be cheaper to replace Kubiak with only a one-year buyout instead of two.
McNair’s alternatives to Kubiak would be plentiful. Kubiak’s current alternatives to Matt Schaub are limited. T.J. Yates led the team to its first playoff win in franchise history, but he barely held off Case Keenum for the starting job.
Keenum presents an intriguing option. The former University of Houston standout has a swagger that Schaub currently doesn’t. And the Texans play in the same state as another team with an undrafted quarterback who has done fairly well.
Regardless of whether it’s Yates or Keenum, there’s really no one else who can turn this mess around in 2013.
Except for the quarterback who created it. If Kubiak bets on Schaub to do it, Kubiak could be going all in with his job.
