Kyle Shanahan addresses accident, says it was his fault

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan has spoken to reporters for the first time since his July 14 automobile accident.

Via Nick Wagoner of ESPN, Shanahan wanted to clarify that the collision was his fault.

He said, per Wagoner, “that he took eyes off the road briefly to find his phone which fell between seats.” When Shanahan looked up, he had crossed the center line and collided with the other car.

Shanahan also said that the California Highway Patrol’s report, which placed fault on the other driver, was not accurate. The CHP database, as Shanahan explained it, had a clerical error.

On Monday night, Grant Cohn of SI.com reported, citing public records, that the accident was deemed to be the other driver’s fault. Cohn also reported that Shanahan was holding and using his cell phone.
