Come April 30, Alabama safety Landon Collins will be rooting for someone to trade up to the fifth spot in the first round of this year’s draft.
Collins is expected to be the first safety picked in this year’s draft and that will likely happen at some point in the first round, but he’s not seen as a prospect worth taking that early in the process. That would mean he would land somewhere other than his dream spot.
“I grew up a Redskins fan,” Collins said on NFL Network. “I was a big Sean Taylor and Clinton Portis fan. Those were my two favorite players, so I grew up seeing them play for the Redskins, so that would be my dream, to play there.”
Washington traded for Dashon Goldson and signed Jeron Johnson this offseason, giving them some needed bodies at safety after struggling to find players to fill the spots last season. That might not take them out of the running for Collins, but it’s a stretch to think they’d select him with the fifth pick. Good thing for Collins’s dream, then, that the team’s thought to be interested in moving down in the first round.
