With the New York Jets imposing a $50,000 fine on coach Rex Ryan for his Saturday night middle-finger salute to fans at a Miami MMA event, the league office has decided to take no further action, according to the Associated Press.
It makes sense. The fine is a stiff one, especially since Ryan’s behavior occurred far away from the workplace and clearly off the clock.
Indeed, if a player were to be photographed flipping a bird on his own time, the league likely would face a major fight from the union if any effort were made to fine the player.
So maybe coaches really are held to a higher standard, the Tom Cable jaw-breaking brouhaha notwithstanding.
