Teams can begin to place the franchise tag on players on Thursday. (Or at least the league says they can. The NFLPA disagrees.)

The Lions, however, won’t be using the tag on Thursday or any other day this year. Tom Kowalski of MLive.com reports the Lions won’t use the tag because there isn’t a player worthy of the designation.

Detroit’s list of prospective free agents is one of the reasons why the Lions will be a trendy team to improve greatly in 2011. They won’t lose anyone too valuable.

Cornerback Chris Houston is the most useful unsigned players with four or more years of service on the team. After that, it’s a steep drop to third-string quarterback Drew Stanton and linebacker Landon Johnson were the next most valuable players that could leave.
