Looming Lions blowout raises questions about Caldwell, Mayhew

After once again taking an early lead, the Lions once again are headed for a defeat. If the 24-3 margin in London holds, Detroit will fall to 1-7.

And for the third time in 13 months, a team could be making a major change after losing in London.

Unlike the Raiders (who fired coach Dennis Allen after losing at Wembley in 2014) and the Dolphins (who fired coach Joe Philbin after losing at Wembley in October), the Lions could decide to move on from G.M. Martin Mayhew after this one, either instead of or in addition to coach Jim Caldwell.

General Managers typically are fired after the season. But the Lions fired G.M. Matt Millen during the 0-16 season of 2008; they could choose to do that again.

It’s unclear what will happen with Mayhew or Caldwell because it’s unclear who’s calling the shot. Martha Ford has emerged in recent weeks as the leader of the family business, and at 90 she may be feeling the urgency to make this team into a winner.

The question becomes what will make this team into a winner more quickly? Will it be yet another new head coach in 2016, or will it be a new G.M. looking for ways to enhance the talent on the roster and to support Caldwell?

Regardless of who it is or when it happens, change is coming to Detroit. Again.
