Major Wright viewed as a defensive Tim Tebow

Major Wright is under pressure to start right away now that the Bears made him their first pick in the 2010 NFL draft, and that’s a lot of pressure to put on the 75th overall pick.

But both Wright’s old coach, Florida’s Urban Meyer, and his new coach, Chicago’s Lovie Smith, say he’s ready for that pressure. And they both compare him to Tim Tebow in explaining what they like about him.

He’s got a little bit of the Tebow effect on the defense,” Meyer is quoted as saying at the Bears’ official web site. “He’s an extremely high character guy that football means the world to him. He’s always where he’s supposed to be academically. If you get yourself a whole bunch of Major Wrights, you’re playing excellent defense.”

Smith said he thinks Wright can be not just a starter but a leader, even as a rookie.

“Tim Tebow did an awful lot for Florida’s team on the offensive side of the ball,” Smith said. “I think Urban Meyer will talk about Major doing some of those same things as far as being the guy that is vocal, that players look to for a little bit of that leadership.”
