A day after prematurely announcing a deal with quarterback Mark Sanchez under circumstances that cried out tampering, the Cowboys have announced a deal with the 2009 No. 5 overall pick who had fallen to No. 3 in Denver before being cut.
Sanchez instantly has been stalled as No. 3 in Dallas, with no No. 4. The team waived Jameill Showers to make a roster spot for Sanchez.
The move means that the Cowboys most likely have decided not to place Tony Romo on injured reserve with an opportunity to return later. To be eligible for a return from IR, the player must be on the initial 53-man roster. Romo was. But instead of shelving him for at least six weeks, the team opted to send Showers to the waiver wire in lieu of carrying four quarterbacks on the active roster.
If unclaimed, the Cowboys could add Showers to the practice squad. Or they could sign another young quarterback to the 10-man unit. Or they could just stick with Dak Prescott and Sanchez until Romo is ready.
The Broncos should be happy Sanchez landed elsewhere; every dollar he earns in Dallas counts against the $1 million in guaranteed salary he received from Denver.
