Mark Wilf: Rick Spielman is the perfect guy to run the team

Earlier this month there was a report that the Vikings made overtures to Bill Parcells about running the franchise before they promoted Rick Spielman to general manager.

Co-owner Mark Wilf told Mark Craig of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune that it never happened because he thinks they have the perfect guy to run their team in Spielman. Wilf said the team is comfortable with Spielman’s plan for building the team and that there’s no displeasure with the path he’s taken in his first year running the show.

“From A to Z, he has all the tools you need to run a football operation,” Wilf said. “We felt he was the perfect choice to be our general manager.”

Wilf had plenty of strong things to say about Spielman’s credentials and said the team is committed to him for the long term, but he stopped short of discussing his contract status. Per Craig, this is the last year on the last contract that he signed with the team but Wilf wouldn’t say whether or not they extended him when he moved up to general manager because “contracts are something we keep internal.”

Absent an extension, the commitment doesn’t feel all that strong.
