Free agency opened a month ago Friday, featuring a weak crop of veteran quarterbacks. Despite the low supply and continuous demand for competent signal-callers, Mike Vick’s name hasn’t surfaced in any NFL city.
Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Vick still intends to play. With the draft less than three weeks away, the thinking is that teams that need help at quarterback but that can’t get the rookie they want may become interested after the draft in Vick.
Even then, any team that brings in Vick needs to have a starter who lacks any insecurity. While Vick, we’re told, is prepared to accept his role as a backup, the presence on the roster of players who grew up idolizing Vick could make things interesting if/when the starter struggles.
So the starter needs to clearly be the starter, and the rest of the team needs to be willing to accept that even after Mike Vick rolls in to the locker room.
