Marvin Lewis misses two key chances to challenge

Cincinnati Bengals v Denver Broncos

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis was gunshy calling challenges in the second quarter on Sunday, and it cost his team points.

On the first play, Maurice Jones-Drew’s knee was clearly down on a running play, but he got up and ran roughly 30 more yards inside the ten-yard line line. The Jaguars quickly hurried to snap the ball before Lewis acted.

On the ensuing play, Blaine Gabbert appeared to fumble right at the goal line and it wasn’t called. Lewis didn’t throw the challenge play there either.

We did appreciate Lewis’ aggressiveness late in the first half. He went for it on fourth-and-six from the 35-yard line and the Bengals converted.

That led to a touchdown drive capped by a Jermaine Greshman catch. Mike Nugent missed the extra point, and we’re 13-13 at the half in the Dalton-Gabbert Bowl.
