Matt Roth wants out of Cleveland

Browns outside linebacker Matt Roth is hoping his stay in Cleveland is a short one.

Six months after Roth essentially forced his way out of Miami and the Browns claimed him off waivers, Roth asked Cleveland to trade him Monday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The unsigned restricted free agent wants a multi-year contract extension, and the two sides aren’t close to reaching one. Roth had four sacks in six starts in Cleveland last year. He’s expected to start this season.

Roth is by all accounts a solid player, but is he good enough to have much leverage here? Last year, the Dolphins just got sick of him enough to cut him.

We mentioned Sunday that the Browns have discussed lowering the tender offer for their restricted free agents if the players don’t show up by June 15. It appears the standoff with Roth could take a while.
