The Chargers feared that punter Mike Scifres broke his clavicle when he fell hard on his shoulder after Brandon Bolden knocked him over after blocking a punt in Sunday night’s Patriots victory and those fears have been realized.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Scifres is having surgery to repair his clavicle on Monday. Rapoport adds that Scifres should be okay in time to play in the postseason, although the Chargers still have some work to do if they are going to be playing any games after the end of the regular season.
In addition to punting, Scifres handled holding duties for Nick Novak’s field goals and extra points so the Chargers have a couple of roles to fill after Novak handled the punting on Sunday night. Safety Eric Weddle would have been the holder, although San Diego didn’t put any points on the board after Scifres was injured so he didn’t get a chance to show off his skills.
