NFL fines Brandon Meriweather $50,000; no suspension
The NFL’s new get-tough policy on helmet-to-helmet contact will include a hefty fine, but no suspension, for Patriots defensive back Brandon Meriweather.
Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com reports that Meriweather will be fined $50,000 for two helmet-to-helmet hits, but will not be suspended.
Several concussion-causing collisions drew league scrutiny on Sunday, but the hit that appeared to be the most deliberate was the one Meriweather laid on Ravens tight end Todd Heap. Surprisingly, Heap returned to the game and apparently did not suffer a concussion.
Although the NFL is ready to start suspending players for helmet-to-helmet contact, that apparently won’t happen this week, as Meriweather will get off with a fine and not a suspension.
