A deputy who works for the Broward sheriff’s office and has a side job providing security for the Miami Dolphins has been reassigned after he gave preferential treatment to Dolphins defensive end Phillip Merling.
The Sun Sentinel reports that Commander Alvin Pollock, who was previously assigned to overseeing the deputies at the courthouse, has been reassigned because he escorted Merling out a private jail entrance and gave him a ride home in a Sheriff’s Office vehicle after he was arrested last week. Pollock also works for the Dolphins, and an internal affairs investigation into his actions was opened after the ride home for Merling came to light.
Merling was arrested on one count of battery after he was accused of hitting his pregnant girlfriend.
Broward Sheriff Al Lamberti said Pollock violated department policies and added, “We’re not in the business of giving people we arrest for felonies a ride home.”
