Tight end Orson Charles will sign with the Lions after participating in the team’s minicamp as a tryout player, the Detroit Free Press reported Thursday.
Charles, 25, was a fourth-round pick of the Bengals in 2012. He started six of 29 games he played for the Bengals and also saw a little time at fullback.
The Lions have a need for experienced tight end help with Brandon Pettigrew almost certain to open camp on PUP while recovering from a torn ACL. Tim Wright was lost for the season to a torn ACL during the team’s spring workouts.
Charles last played in an NFL game in 2013. He went to camp last season with the Saints.
