Whether the Panthers say it or not, the team is rebuilding. That doesn’t mean they want to trade all their good players for draft picks.

Panthers coach John Fox denied that he’s received phone calls about running back DeAngelo Williams despite reports the Lions were interested. Fox wouldn’t want to trade him anyway.

“We’re not looking to get rid of those guys,” Fox said about Williams and his singing partner Jonathan Stewart. “They’re both very, very capable and, in my opinion, if you’re
going to lean on the run game, you need more than one.”

ESPN’s Pat Yasinikas reports that the Panthers have fielded several calls about linebacker Dan Connor. The team has made it clear the third-year linebacker is not available.

Connor hasn’t played a lot in the team’s base defense, but he looks likely to have a bigger role in 2010, probably as the team’s starting strong-side linebacker.
