Plenty of people will kick off 2015 with a day off from work and the Patriots will be joining them.

Sort of, anyway. The Patriots will hold meetings on Thursday, but multiple beat reporters have passed along that the scheduled practice has been called off by coach Bill Belichick. Belichick’s call comes a day after he had the team take part in a Blue-White scrimmage that was won by the white team made up of the starting defense and second-string offense.

“I think it was beneficial because it was very competitive,” cornerback Darrelle Revis said, via the Boston Herald. “I think you’ve got to give credit to the coaches for seeing that, especially on the bye week. It’s really an off week where we’re not playing, so I think we did a great job of just being competitive, and having that competitive spirit and just trying to work on the things that we’ve talked about that we need to work on in the past.”

Belichick must have agreed it was beneficial to ratchet things down on Thursday. The change in schedule means the Patriots will next practice next Tuesday, when they’ll start preparations for their playoff opener against an opponent to be determined by the results of this weekend’s Wild Card games.
