Pete Carroll and Jim Harbaugh had a fierce rivalry when Carroll was at USC and Harbaugh was at Stanford, and it only grew fiercer when Carroll was in Seattle and Harbaugh was in San Francisco. Now that Harbaugh is back in college, Carroll will miss coaching against him.

Carroll said on Pro Football Talk on NBCSN that he’s sorry he won’t be coaching against Harbaugh this year.

“I’m going to miss him. I saw Jim as an extraordinary competitor and I loved what he brought out in us. We’ve had a lot of games over the years and I appreciate that,” Carroll said.

Michigan is coming off a 5-7 season and hasn’t won the Big Ten since 2004, but Carroll said he expects Harbaugh to get Michigan back to competing for conference championships and national championships.

“It won’t take them long to be able to be fighting for something. Jim just knows how to get that done,” Carroll said.

Carroll and Harbaugh have probably coached against each other for the last time. Although if Urban Meyer ever leaves Ohio State, the Buckeyes should give Carroll a call.
