Tight end Martellus Bennett hasn’t been taking part in the Bears’ voluntary workouts so far this offseason and the team is reportedly open to moving him before they get into the mandatory portion of their training schedule.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the team is entertaining trade offers for Bennett and that Bennett is looking for a new deal in Chicago or somewhere else. Bennett is set to make $4.9 million in base salary in 2015 and just over $5 million in 2016 in the final two years of the four-year pact he signed with the Bears in 2013.
Bennett has turned in three good years in a row since leaving the Cowboys as a free agent after the 2011 season and is coming off his most productive professional season with 90 catches for 916 yards and six touchdowns. He put up those numbers playing in former head coach Marc Trestman’s offense and Trestman is now in Baltimore, where the Ravens haven’t been shy about their desire to add a tight end to the roster.
Whether Bennett is the kind of player they’d be interested in adding is another question altogether, especially if a new contract is going to be part of the equation, and we may get an answer in the next few days.
