When NFL senior V.P. of officiating Dean Blandino said earlier this week that officials missed calling a roughing penalty against Calais Campbell for a low hit on Cam Newton, it was all but assured that a fine would follow.
According to Jarrett Bell of USA Today, that fine came down on Wednesday. Campbell was fined $18,231 for hitting Newton below the knees in the Cardinals 30-20 loss to the Panthers on Sunday. The fine is the minimum fine that can be assessed for a first offense roughing the passer penalty.
Campbell dived at Newton’s knees as Newton was retreating to pass near Arizona’s goal line in the third quarter. Newton was slow to get up after the play and complained after the game about the type of hits he takes as a quarterback that aren’t flagged as penalties.
