For the last few years, Charlie Whitehurst has earned his living by carrying a clipboard and wearing a pair of headphones on the sideline for the Chargers and Titans but that appears set to change on Sunday.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Titans will give Whitehurst the start against the Colts on Sunday because Jake Locker’s right wrist injury is too much for him to overcome this week. It will be the first start for Whitehurst since he got the nod against the Bengals in Week Eight of the 2011 season.
Whitehurst was pulled from that game by Seahawks coach Pete Carroll in favor of a recuperating Tarvaris Jackson, which is a pretty good shorthand for how well all four of Whitehurst’s previous NFL starts have gone. The veteran backup says he’s ready for the gig on Sunday and his hair is certainly up for any spotlight, but history says it is going to be an uphill slog for the Titans on the road against their divisional foe.
Whitehurst should have tight end Delanie Walker to throw to on Sunday. Schefter reports he’ll play after being listed as questionable with a shoulder injury.
