The Texans no longer have a quarterback competition. Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Brian Hoyer will be named the starter over Ryan Mallett after each started one preseason game.
Neither quarterback was especially good last Saturday vs. the Broncos, and after the game Texans coach Bill O’Brien said he was “not in a rush” to name a starter after “the whole offense was subpar.”
But with this week being the most important of the preseason and the opener 20 days away, apparently O’Brien had seen enough to make his decision. O’Brien had said as little as possible publicly about the competition or when he planned to name a starter.
Hoyer has the experience edge with 32 career appearances and a 10-7 record as a starter over the last three seasons. He signed a two-year deal in March after things went sour in Cleveland and he was benched last December following a hot start.
