The Jets’ former head coach is headed to a division rival, but it looks like the team may have an announcement of their own to counter the news of Rex Ryan joining the Bills.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Jets are expected to hire Texans director of college scouting Mike Maccagnan as their new General Manager.
Maccagnan was called back for a second interview late this week and has remained in town talking to the Jets for several days, which certainly points toward an announcement in the near future that he’ll be John Idzik’s successor. A long relationship with Charley Casserly from Washington and Houston couldn’t have hurt Maccagnan’s chances in the interview process and his personnel background was desired after the Jets went in the other direction with Idzik.
The Jets had indicated a preference to hire a General Manager before picking a head coach, although Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that they were prepared to fly out to Seattle to “try to hire” Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn if Seattle lost on Saturday night. Quinn’s previously been described as the favorite for the job and Maccagnan could well have been on a plane with owner Woody Johnson had things gone down differently against the Panthers.
