Robert Griffin III is trying to rebuild his football career in Cleveland, while starting a new chapter in his life as well.
According to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Griffin has separated from his wife and is in the process of filing for divorce.
He’s far from the first quarterback to go down this road, after the Seahawks announced that Russell Wilson had filed for divorce in 2014. Many more people do the same thing outside the glare that comes with being an NFL quarterback, and the attention that follows a difficult decision.
Griffin has reportedly told coaches and teammates of the decision and they’ve been supporting him. The former Washington quarterback has also earned positive reviews for taking over a difficult football situation, and demonstrating a degree of leadership. Former Baylor teammate Josh Gordon, coming back from his own personal trauma, said Griffin had been there for him throughout.
“Robert, we go back a long time and I think that’ll be one of my best friends for the rest of my life,’' Gordon said. “I can’t say enough about that guy. He looks out for me. That’s part of my support staff. I know he’s a big brother in that regard. As much as I need him, everybody else in this building needs him just as much.”
He’ll also need them, as he adjusts to the multiple changes in store for him.
