It hasn’t been a terrific couple of weeks for Rex Grossman.

He lost his job as the starting quarterback of the Redskins after a dreadful performance against the Eagles in Week Six and he spent Sunday’s loss to the Panthers in the locker room hooked up to an IV because he was ill. That illness has landed him in the hospital and Grossman will remain there through at least Tuesday thanks to a case of pneumonia.

Mike Shanahan made the announcement about Grossman’s condition on Monday. He said that had John Beck been injured in Carolina, Grossman would have been summoned from the locker room. Given the level of his sickness, it is a good thing that didn’t come to pass.

The Redskins don’t have a third quarterback on their active roster. Jonathan Crompton, a 2010 fifth-round pick of the Chargers, is on their practice squad. According to Mike Jones of the Washington Post, Crompton will run the scout team this week if Grossman isn’t up to it later this week.
