Last year, when the bizarre stories of Jets coach Rex Ryan and his wife being involved in foot-fetish videos became public, Ryan handled the story by mostly ignoring it. That was smart: As Congressman Anthony Weiner would learn the hard way several months later, when you’ve posted embarrassing things about yourself online, you only make it worse if you try to deny it.
The strategy of ignoring it, however, became harder today when Ryan’s twin brother, Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, talked about the matter.
But for his part, Rex Ryan is still not going to get into it, no matter what his brother says. Rex was asked at his press conference today to respond to his brother’s comments, and he wouldn’t.
“I’ll say this, if it’s a personal matter then you know what my response is going to be, ‘It’s a personal matter,’” Rex Ryan said, as transcribed by the team’s PR staff. “It was a personal matter then, it will be a personal matter now, tomorrow and years later.”
With the Jets hosting the Cowboys on Sunday, Rex Ryan said he will be talking to Rob -- but more about getting tickets for the whole family than anything else.
“We will definitely speak this week,” Rex Ryan said. “I spoke with him, he wanted to upgrade his tickets and all that stuff so I talked to him about that. I think they are coming here for a vacation, that’s what it sounded like to me. We’ll get after each other, no question.”
And part of the brothers getting after each other may involve Rex asking Rob to kindly refrain from opening his mouth about personal matters.
