Rhett Bomar is ready for his close up

Sure, it’s the preseason. But Giants quarterback Rhett Bomar (known by some in the media as Brett Romar) will be receiving a rare opportunity against the Steelers in his team’s first home non-game game at the new Meadowlands Stadium.

Zach Berman of the Newark Star-Ledger reports that Bomar is expected to play “nearly the entire game.”

Bomar gets his chance to show the Giants and any other interested team what he can do because of the Frankenstein forehead wound suffered on Monday night by starter Eli Manning and the carpal tunnel syndrome Jim Sorgi has developed after years of holding a clipboard. (Actually, he has a shoulder injury. Developed after years of holding a clipboard.)

Still, the internal expectations for Bomar are low.

“There’s a lot of pressure on him,” Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride said, per Berman. “Instead of looking at guys he’s been on the scout team with, all of a sudden he’s looking at starters, and they’re expecting him to lead and do the things Eli would do, and it’s not fair to expect that of him.”

Still, it’s the biggest and best opportunity Bomar has received since being kicked off the Oklahoma football team for getting paid money in violation of league rules, something that we’ve recently learned never, ever happens.

So good luck Rhett/Brett. If you have a big game against the Steelers, maybe more of us will get your name right.
