One of the more surprising developments from last week’s league meetings in New Orleans came from the decision of the league to table until May at the earliest the question of whether the rules regarding hits on defenseless players should be tweak.
So we asked Competition Committee chairman Rich McKay to elaborate on the reasons for the decision, and to give us an idea as to whether the issue will indeed be taken up in May -- or whether like so many other proposed changes “tabled” is synonymous with “killed.”
It sounds like the coaches simply needed more information. It also sounds like the owners should have found something else for the coaches to do when the issue was discussed, like they did when the overtime rules for the postseason were changed in 2010.
