Richard Sherman: Kam Chancellor “damages people’s souls”

Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor kept himself busy on Saturday night against the Panthers.

Chancellor had 10 tackles, two leaps over the offensive line on Graham Gano field goal tries during the extended end of the first half and finally a 90-yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter that seemed to have the same effect on the home crowd as Marshawn Lynch’s memorable trip to the end zone against the Saints in 2011.

It also put an end to any hopes that the Panthers might have had about coming back to beat the Seahawks and led coach Pete Carroll to say that Chancellor had as good a game as a strong safety could hope to have. Cornerback Richard Sherman went for a more imaginative description of the impact Chancellor had by saying that his teammate “damages people’s souls” with his style of play.

“He plays in a dark place. We feed off of him all game long. He’s an intimidator, aggressive ball player, and he plays by the rules,” Sherman said, via the team’s website. “I couldn’t imagine him playing in the ‘70s. Some people wouldn’t be here today if he was able to play in the ‘70s.”

Barring the arrival of a plutonium-powered DeLorean, we’ll have to keep guessing about that. Chancellor’s just fine in the current time period, of course, and more of the same next week will make a return trip to the Super Bowl a lot likelier for the Seahawks.
