Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel doesn’t need to hire a defensive coordinator because he will likely handle the role himself.
Appearing on SiriusXM with Alex Marvez and Jim Miller, Chiefs G.M. Scott Pioli indicated that Crennel wants to run his defense.
“I’m not sure if he stated it publicly, but I get the sense Romeo wants to be the coordinator on defense,” Pioli said. “I don’t know if he’s made the absolute final decision, but I’m pretty sure that’s the way he wants to go.”
Marvez also reports the team will retain defensive backs coach Emmitt Thomas. There were reports the Raiders were interested in Thomas. Pioli doesn’t see an issue with Crennel taking on multiple roles.
“Even if sometimes a head coach doesn’t say they’re coordinating something, we’re all able and smart enough to watch how things go. There are a lot of [head] coaches who run their offenses and defenses. I don’t think it’s that unique,” Pioli said.
Crennel will not running the Chiefs offense. We haven’t heard any candidates for that position, but former Dolphins offensive coordinator Brian Daboll would make a lot of sense because of his connections to Crennel and Pioli.
