Nine years ago, former Saints defensive back Steve Gleason broke through the line, stretched, out, and blocked a Falcons punt that was returned for a touchdown to reopen the Superdome following Hurricane Katrina.
On Thursday night, current Saints linebacker Michael Mauti did the same thing, with one exception. Mauti got to the ball even before Falcons punter Matt Bosher could even apply his foot to it.
Bosher ended up face first on the Superdome turf, and the Falcons ended up leading 14-0 after what NFL.com is describing as a blocked punt. Even though there never was an actual punt.
It’s the first 14-point lead for the Saints of the year. The Falcons, however, have trailed by double digits more than a few times this year, despite being 5-0. Against the Cowboys, Atlanta trailed by 14 points three different times, before outscoring the Cowboys, 25-0.
