Saints left tackle Terron Armstead has dealt with multiple lower body injuries this season and hasn’t played in more than three straight games at any point this season, which won’t change in the final weeks of the regular season.

The Saints placed Armstead on injured reserve Wednesday, ending his season a few days after he was able to play the entire game in a loss to the Buccaneers. Armstead had missed three of the previous four games, however, and it’s been clear for several weeks that trying to play through his knee and quad issues wasn’t making them any better.

Armstead signed a five-year extension with the team before this season, so he’s in their long-term plans. The early end to this season will give him a bit more time to get back to 100 percent before getting back to work in 2017 and 2015 first-round pick Andrus Peat will play out the string at left tackle in his place.

The Saints filled the roster spot by signing veteran linebacker Jason Trusnik. Trusnik played eight games for the Vikings last year and has also played for the Dolphins, Browns and Jets since entering the league in 2007.
