Green Bay Packers cornerback Sam Shields has experienced a myriad of injuries during his football career. However, none was more damaging to Shields than the concussion suffered last December.
According to Lori Nickel of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Shields explained that the concussion suffered on Dec. 13 against the Dallas Cowboys was the worst injury he’s suffered in his playing career.
The injury forced Shields to miss the final three games of the regular season and a playoff game against Washington before being able to return to the field.
“When I went out there to try to work out at first, I still felt it in my head,” Shields said. “Just running, doing physical things, your brain’s moving. That’s your head, your brain. It’s real scary.”
Shields said it was the third concussions he’s had during his football career. One came in college at the University of Miami (FL). The other with Green Bay in 2011.
“Concussions — one minute you feel better, the next minute you don’t,” Shields said. “You never know. I didn’t want to risk something serious happening and then my career would be over with. I don’t like them. The headaches are tough.”
Shields played well in his return against Arizona in the postseason. He started and recorded three tackles and two passes defended against the Cardinals. He now says the symptoms are gone and he’s been able to take part in all of the Packers’ offseason programs.
