It will be some time before wide receiver Sammy Watkins will be able to get back on the field after having surgery on the stress fracture in his left foot last month, but he may move closer to that point on Thursday.

Watkins told Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News that he hopes to get the green light to remove the walking boot that he’s been wearing to protect the foot. Watkins added that he doesn’t have a timetable for when he will be able to resume football activities and isn’t sure if it will be during training camp, something that coach Rex Ryan said as well on Wednesday.

“All I know is that Sammy won’t miss time in the regular season,” Ryan said, via Tyler Dunne of the Buffalo News.

Given the vague overall timeline for Watkins’ recovery, it’s a bit soon to set any proclamations of that sort in stone. It does seem like a good bet to take the under on the amount of preseason work that Watkins will do, though.
