The New York Jets placed five players, including wide receiver Santonio Holmes, on the physically unable to perform list prior to the start of training camp on Friday.
In addition to Holmes, the Jets also placed nose tackle Junior Aumavae, defensive end Jake McDonough, defensive back Rontez Miles and cornerback Mike Edwards on the PUP list per the league’s transaction wire. Wide receiver K.J. Stroud and cornerback Darrin Walls were placed on the non-football injury list.
Holmes has undergone two surgeries on his left foot since suffering a Lisfranc injury early last season. The move to place Holmes on PUP wasn’t unexpected as he still isn’t close to full-strength.
The Jets can activate Holmes, or any of their other players on PUP, any time during the preseason if they can be medically cleared to practice. If they aren’t ready by the end of training camp and remain on the PUP list, they will be ineligible to return for the first six weeks of the season.
