Seahawks promote George Farmer to bolster banged-up backfield

The Seattle Seahawks have made a push to distance themselves from the rest of the NFC West and challenge the Dallas Cowboys for the top seed in the conference.

The Seahawks lost a pair of running backs to injuries against the Eagles last Sunday, leaving them with backup quarterback Trevone Boykin taking a handoff from Russell Wilson in the fourth quarter of the game.

They made a roster move Wednesday designed to keep from finding themselves in that situation against the Buccaneers in Week 12. The team announced that they have promoted running back George Farmer from the practice squad. Offensive lineman J’Marcus Webb was waived on Tuesday to open the roster spot.

Farmer came to USC as a wide receiver and played cornerback on the Seahawks practice squad last year before being moved to running back during the offseason. Thomas Rawls and rookie Alex Collins join him on the depth chart and figure to be the top rushing options with C.J. Prosise and Troymaine Pope on the mend.

Coach Pete Carroll said in his press conference that Pope is making a quick recovery, but didn’t say whether there was a chance his ankle would be well enough to be a consideration for this weekend.
