Sean Payton addresses the plans for proceeding without Kareem Jackson

The Broncos have lost safety Kareem Jackson, again. This time around, he’ll miss four games after his latest illegal hit.

How will the Broncos replace him?

“We’ll rep a few different players there,” coach Sean Payton told reporters on Wednesday. “We’ll see where we’re at health-wise. There’s not a whole lot to say. We kind of went through the process. He had an appeals process yesterday, and it kind of is what it is right now.”

What it is is that the Broncos won’t have Jackson for a month.

“The solutions are in the building,” Payton said. “Then you pay attention to other rosters relative to practice squads. We have guys we’re developing on our practice squad. We’ve played two guys already without him. It depends on the team you’re playing. There are some weeks you’re going to be in a lot of nickel or penny. There are some weeks where you’re going to be a lot of base. A lot of it depends on what the game plan is going to feature, but it starts in the building.”

It’s unclear where the responsibility for Jackson’s irresponsible play starts. Is he freelancing, or is he coached to do what he does?

For some reason, only the players who engage in unsafe tactics face real discipline. The coaches don’t get suspended.

If they did, there’s a good chance we’d see far fewer illegal hits.
