Sebastian Janikowski has one of the strongest legs in NFL history, and that leg has just earned a spot in the NFL record book.
Janikowski’s 50-yard field goal in last night’s win over the Chargers was the 52nd field goal of 50 yards or longer in his career. That ties the NFL record, set by former Lions kicker Jason Hanson. Janikowski is 52-for-92 in his career on field goals of 50 or more yards.
It’s particularly impressive that Janikowski has managed to tie this record while playing in Oakland, on a field that doubles as a baseball diamond and often has bad footing. Many of the NFL’s kicking records are owned by kickers who spent most of their careers in the more comfortable confines of a dome.
Janikowski’s overtime field goal, which gave the Raiders their final points in a 23-20 win, was the 384th field goal of his career, moving him ahead of Nick Lowery for the 10th most field goals in NFL history. On a night that was mostly about celebrating Charles Woodson, the 37-year-old Janikowski showed that he too is a great Raider.
