We’ve heard the question asked in Minnesota and nationally: Could the Vikings think about taking a quarterback with the No. 3 overall pick despite the presence of Christian Ponder?
Tuesday’s promotion of Rick Spielman to G.M. makes that scenario very unlikely.
As Tom Pelissero of espn1500.com points out, Ponder is one of Spielman’s guys. So is offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave.
The fact that Donovan McNabb was coach Leslie Frazier’s “guy” is likely part of the reason Frazier will have less say over personnel matters.
There are a lot of scenarios that could play out with Minnesota’s first round pick. It’s too early to assume just about anything with the draft.
But it’s fairly clear that Tuesday’s news is great for Ponder’s development. It’s a vote of confidence. The Vikings are likely to build the team around Ponder.
We’ll be able to ask Spielman about Ponder and all things Vikings when he appears on PFT Live Wednesday.
