With Le’Veon Bell injured and possibly unavailable for Saturday’s playoff game against the Ravens, the Steelers have added some insurance at the position.
Free agent running back Ben Tate has been signed, the team announced today.
Tate has bounced around the league this year, first signing with the Browns, then getting cut and going to Minnesota. He didn’t play particularly well in either stop, averaging just 3.1 yards a carry in Cleveland and 2.9 yards a carry with the Vikings. But Tate had three solid seasons with the Texans from 2011 to 2013, and he’s probably the best running back available right now.
To make room for Tate on the 53-player roster, the Steelers released wide receiver Justin Brown.
