Steelers awarded Devin Gardner on waivers

The Steelers are taking a shot on Devin Gardner.

Pittsburgh has been awarded Gardner, the former Michigan quarterback/wide receiver, on waivers from New England, the club said Tuesday.

The 6-foot-4, 216-pound Gardner signed with the Patriots as a rookie free agent after the draft, but New England parted ways with him Monday.

In announcing the claim of Gardner, the Steelers listed him as a wide receiver, which suggests that’s the position he’ll play in Pittsburgh. He caught 18 passes for 286 yards and four touchdowns in his collegiate career, with most of that production in 2012.

In a corresponding roster move, the Steelers waived wide receiver L’Damian Washington from Missouri.
