Steve Smith “still on schedule” to hang ‘em up after 2015

Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. broke four bones in his back earlier this month but missed just one game before returning. He’s leading a 1-5 team in receptions and touchdowns. He looks like a guy who’s still very much on top of his game, but Smith announced before the season that this will be his last season.

“I’m on schedule for what I discussed earlier in the year,” Smith told reporters Wednesday.

Interestingly, though, Smith didn’t use the word “retirement.” And his use of “on schedule” indicates he reserves the right to change his mind.

Smith is always interesting and rarely scripted, so we’ll see. The Ravens have struggled, and if the team doesn’t turn it around quickly Smith could be motivated to want to go out differently. But he said he’s felt no internal pressure to put off retirement.

“Man, we’re 1-5,” Smith said, per ESPN’s Jamison Hensley. “You think we’re talking about persuading? We’re trying to fix all of the damn holes in this boat right now.”
