Surgery not expected for Freeney

As part of his 23-minute “Past is Prologue” (it sounds like a phony movie title from Seinfeld) press conference, Colts president Bill Polian talked about defensive end Dwight Freeney’s ankle injury.

Per Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star, Polian said that Freeney is not expected to undergo surgery for the condition that provided much of the fodder for news and analysis in the days preceding Super Bowl XLIV.

During the second half of the game, Westwood One sideline reporter Mark Malone said that Freeney’s ankle had swollen to the point where it was as big as his calf muscle.

And while in theory Freeney would have plenty of time to recover before the next season arrives, the reality is that the proliferation of offseason workouts means that Freeney will be missing work if he’s not ready to go by late March, when the lifting and conditioning sessions begin.
