Giants cornerback Terrell Thomas’ attempt to return from a third torn ACL in his right knee took a step forward on Tuesday.
The Giants activated Thomas from the physically unable to perform list, freeing him to start practicing with his teammates for the first time since the start of training camp. Thomas hasn’t played a regular season down since the 2010 season because of the last two tears and one imagines that the Giants will proceed cautiously with him in hopes of avoiding another crushing injury.
Guard Chris Snee is also coming off the PUP list on Tuesday, giving coach Tom Coughlin his first chance to see his son-in-law on the field this summer. Snee had hip surgery this offseason to fix a problem that’s nagged him for a couple of years and will be reinstalled at his familiar right guard spot now that he’s been cleared to resume football activities.
Three Giants -- defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, fullback Henry Hynoski and defensive tackle Markus Kuhn -- remain on the PUP list. General Manager Jerry Reese said during an interview on WFAN Tuesday that the team still expects Pierre-Paul, who had back surgery, to be on the field for the start of the regular season.
