The season is over for the No. 1 pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.
The Texans will place outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney on injured reserve because of a right knee ailment, coach Bill O’Brien said Thursday, according to the club’s official Twitter feed.
Clowney is slated to undergo surgery on the injured knee, O’Brien said, with the head coach noting “it’s time to clean it up,” according to the club.
Clowney had reportedly seen Dr. James Andrews for an evaluation of the knee.
The 21-year-old Clowney has played in just four regular season games for Houston, notching seven tackles and no sacks. He has battled injuries throughout his brief pro career, with the knee issues troubling him throughout the fall. He also dealt with a sports hernia and a concussion in the preseason.
Clowney had surgery to repair a meniscus tear after Houston’s season opener vs. Washington. He did not return to the lineup until the final game in October (Week Eight). He then missed Houston’s next game because of an illness. After the club’s Week 10 bye, Clowney played in the next two games, then sat out Sunday’s win vs. Tennessee because of the knee.
Now, the Texans are pushing the reset button for 2014 with an eye on getting the promising pass rusher back to full health.
