Russell Wilson is doing just fine as quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks and will likely receive a hefty extension with the team this offseason.
But just in case Wilson tires of this football thing, the Texas Rangers will continue to hold his baseball rights.
According to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, the Rangers placed Wilson on their Triple-A roster ahead of Thursday’s Rule 5 draft.
The move all but guarantees that Wilson will remain a part of the Rangers organization. While still eligible to be grabbed by another team in the draft, the move would cost that team $50,000 to gain his rights and require the team to keep Wilson on their major league roster for the entire 2015 season or his rights would revert back to the Rangers.
Since Wilson has no intention of switching careers, it would be a waste to select him. The move could have been intriguing to another team had Wilson remained on the Rangers Double-A roster, where the cost and rules to keep his rights would have been more favorable.
Wilson joined the Rangers in spring training last year for a day of fielding grounders and batting practice. He also spoke with the team during his visit with the organization. Wilson played minor league baseball in the Colorado Rockies organization while in college at North Carolina State.
