That Chris Johnson slump isn’t going away

We’re almost though one-third of the season. That slow start that Chris Johnson got off to after his holdout has stretched out to a slow middle.

Johnson ripped off a 21-yard gain on his first run from scrimmage Sunday against Pittsburgh. He gained only 30 yards on his next 13 totes, and didn’t make an impact on his three catches for 14 yards. He sat out the end of the game with a minor hamstring issue.

Perhaps it was just the Pittsburgh defense finally flexing it’s muscles. Perhaps it was the blocking, which has taken most of the blame for Johnson’s struggles with good reason.

Whatever the excuse, the reality is that the Chris Johnson of a few years ago would have found a way to create something more by now.

Johnson is averaging 2.9 yards-per-carry this season, which puts him 45th out of 47 eligible players. Johnson is on pace for 800 rushing yards and the Titans are dead last in rushing yards-per-game despite their 3-2 record.

It’s all very mystifying, but the Titans need to figure out the problem if they want to win the AFC South. The team has a bye before it faces the Texans in Week 6.
