Week One was a good one for Missouri’s football teams.
The Chiefs pasted the Jaguars 28-2, the Rams came back to beat the Cardinals 27-24 and a defensive player from each team wound up recording three sacks on the way to victory. The NFL announced Wednesday that those players have each been named the defensive player of the week for their respective conferences.
Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston spearheaded a shutout effort by the Chiefs defense with three sacks against the hapless Jacksonville offense. The 2012 Pro Bowler finished last season with 10 sacks, a number that may not wind up standing as his career high for very long should he continue to pressure offenses even half as well as he did in the season opener.
Rams defensive end Robert Quinn added a pair of forced fumbles to the three sacks in the victory over the Cardinals. The second one came in the fourth quarter when Quinn stripped Arizona quarterback Carson Palmer and the Rams recovered to set up Greg Zuerlein’s game-tying field goal. Quinn had 10.5 sacks last season, second on the team to Chris Long and a repeat performance from the two defensive ends would put the Rams in good shape as they try to keep pace with the 49ers and Seahawks in the NFC West.
